The ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS also marks the debut of the brand’s first all-electric member of the sporty vRS family. While the roofline gently slopes towards the rear from the B-pillar, the new coupé offers plenty of space in the rear and a boot capacity of 570 l. Just like in the ENYAQ iV, the classic trim levels for the interior have been replaced with the Design Selections. There is a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive, and two power variants with outputs of 204* and 299 PS (vRS variant). The outstanding drag coefficient (cd) of 0.234 is even better than that of the ENYAQ iV and, depending on the specification, enables a range of more than 335 miles*** in the WLTP cycle.
Following the successful launch of the all-electric ENYAQ iV SUV, ŠKODA is expanding its first model range based on Volkswagen Group’s MEB modular electric car platform to include the ENYAQ Coupé iV. Both variants roll off the production line at ŠKODA’s main plant in Mladá Boleslav, making them the only MEB-based models within the Volkswagen Group in Europe to be manufactured outside of Germany.
At first glance, the dynamically designed, four-door coupé is characterised by a roofline that gently slopes towards the rear from the B-pillar, merging with the tailgate that features a sharp trailing edge. The vehicle’s lines are further accentuated by a dark tinted panoramic glass roof, which comes as standard. It spans the entire roof and is the largest in the current ŠKODA portfolio. From the side, alloy wheels measuring between 19 and 21 inches and body-coloured side skirts emphasise the car’s sleek appearance. A sporty front apron provides another unique touch. In addition to the SportLine variant, the new coupé is also available as a vRS model, which makes it the first all-electric member of the vRS family from ŠKODA. This variant features the Crystal Face as standard – with 131 LEDs illuminating the ŠKODA grille’s vertical ribs and horizontal light strip. In terms of powertrain, two electric motors provide all-wheel drive and a system output of 299 PS**, enabling a particularly dynamic driving experience and a top speed of 111 mph – 12 mph more than any other ENYAQ iV model.
There is a choice of two powertrain variants for the ENYAQ Coupé iV. Power output starts at 204 PS* with the rear-wheel-drive ENYAQ Coupé iV 80, which is equipped with an 82-kWh battery (net: 77 kWh). The ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS, uses a second motor on the front axle to provide all-wheel drive and produces 299 PS. Thanks to its outstanding aerodynamics and a drag coefficient (cd) of 0.234, the new coupé is even more efficient than the excellent ENYAQ iV. Depending on the specification, the ENYAQ COUPÉ iV 80 boasts a range of more than 335 miles*** in the WLTP cycle.
Due to its composition and long wheelbase, the MEB platform opens up new possibilities regarding body proportions and design. As the voltage battery is fully incorporated in the underbody and electric vehicles don’t have a transmission tunnel, the space available for rear-seat passengers is also particularly generous. The ENYAQ Coupé iV’s boot measures a spacious 570 l. The interior is defined by the Design Selections which are inspired by modern living environments and use natural, sustainably processed and recycled materials, same as in the ENYAQ iV. The clear structure of the options available with packs arranged by ten themes and select individual choices mean the car can be configured in just six steps. Key vehicle functions can be operated intuitively using the 13-inch central infotainment screen. The 5.3-inch Digital Cockpit, which can be supplemented by a head-up display with augmented reality, allows the driver to keep an eye on the most important driving data and information on the vehicle status at all times.

The new ŠKODA ENYAQ Coupé iV is even more dynamic and sporty than the ENYAQ iV SUV variant. From the B-pillar, the roofline gently slopes to merge with the car’s stunning rear, featuring a trailing edge. The body-coloured side skirts and the black panoramic glass roof, which comes as standard, create distinctive visual highlights. The range-topping ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS sports black design features and the vRS-typical red reflector strip at the rear. This variant also comes with the Crystal Face as standard, which illuminates the striking ŠKODA grille with 131 LEDs.
The new ENYAQ Coupé iV is 4,653 mm long, 1,879 mm wide and 1,622 mm high. Its wheelbase measures a generous 2,765 mm and appears even longer than it actually is due to the body-coloured side skirts (another standard feature). Large alloy wheels with diameters ranging from 19 to 21 inches underscore the car’s athletic lines. A distinct front apron sets the ŠKODA ENYAQ Coupé iV apart from the ENYAQ iV. The black panoramic glass roof, which comes as standard, spans the entire roof and slopes gently towards the rear from the B-pillar to merge seamlessly with the sharp trailing edge of the car’s striking rear. With the largest glass roof in any ŠKODA, the incoming light makes the interior feel airy and as it is thinner than a full roof, it provides passengers with plenty of headroom. Its special coating means the temperature inside remains pleasant at all times. Another striking feature is the ‘ŠKODA’ block lettering on the tailgate. The chrome trim on the window frames and the chrome surround of the ŠKODA grille provide a stylish contrast. There is a choice of two standard colours and seven metallic paintwork options for the ENYAQ Coupé iV. Metallic Phoenix Orange and metallic Graphite Grey, which has replaced ŠKODA’s metallic Quartz Grey, make their ENYAQ iV debut. The striking Hyper Green finish is exclusive to the ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS.
The slim, precision-cut headlights of the new coupé are equipped with LED modules for low beam, high beam and daytime running lights as standard. Within the optional full-LED Matrix headlights, each high-beam module features 24 LEDs, which can be controlled individually and enable the driver to have the high beam on at all times without dazzling other road users. Both the ENYAQ Coupé iV 80 SportLine and the ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS come with Matrix technology as well as the top-end full-LED tail lights as standard. The latter form the brand-typical C-shaped light cluster and they feature crystalline, additionally illuminated areas, dynamic indicators and an animated Coming/Leaving Home function. The Crystal Face – with 131 LEDs illuminating the ŠKODA grille’s horizontal bar and vertical ribs and blending into the animated Welcome effect of the full-LED Matrix headlights – is another standard feature for the ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS and optional for the other variants.
The ENYAQ Coupé iV 80 SportLine and the new ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS are particularly dynamic: they feature a sports chassis as standard, meaning that they are 15 mm lower at the front and 10 mm at the rear. Further sporty design detailing is included in the surround of the ŠKODA grille, window trim and rear diffuser. They all have a gloss black finish, as does the ŠKODA lettering and model designation at the rear, and the air curtain trim on the front apron. The trim on the ENYAQ Coupé iV 80 SportLine is C-shaped, while it features an additional centrepiece forming an E on the vRS variant. The wing mirror caps on the range-topping ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS are gloss black and the rear apron comes with a red reflector running across the entire width of the vehicle. This is a distinguishing characteristic of all ŠKODA vRS models. The two sportiest coupé variants can also be identified by their model-specific wing badges either displaying SportLine lettering or the vRS emblem.
Both the ENYAQ Coupé iV 80 SportLine and the ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS are equipped with acoustic front and rear side windows made of laminated glass that reduce the noise level in the interior as standard. The rear window and rear side windows are tinted. The ENYAQ Coupé iV 80 SportLine rolls on anthracite 20-inch Vega alloy wheels as standard; black 21-inch Betria alloys are optional. Both wheel options for the ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS feature aerodynamically optimised plastic Aero trims. 20-inch black Taurus alloys are fitted as standard, while 21-inch Vision anthracite wheels are also available as an extra.

As with the SUV, the Design Selections make it particularly easy to configure a brand-new ENYAQ Coupé iV. They have been inspired by modern living environments and follow a cohesive style regarding the materials used, the upholstery, decorative trims and dashboard. Five Design Selections can be chosen for the ENYAQ Coupé iV 80 model. For that extra sports styling, there is also a model-specific option for the ENYAQ Coupé iV 80 SportLine, while the vRS Suite Design Selection is reserved for the ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS.
The entry-level specification for the new coupé is the Design Selection ‘Loft’, offering a modern and homely feel with easy-to-clean materials and a harmonious combination of grey and black shades. Sustainable materials characterise the Design Selection ‘Lodge’; the seat covers are made of 40% natural new wool with the Woolmark Company quality seal and 60% polyester from recycled PET bottles. The dashboard is upholstered in fabric with soft materials and light colours. Leather and Suedia microfibre lend the Design Selection ‘Lounge’ a distinct aesthetic and modern look. Further exclusive detailing comes in the form of coloured piping and contrasting stitching. Soft, black leather seats with contrasting cognac-coloured stitching and piping create the ambience of a luxurious living room in the Design Selection ‘Suite’. This classic feel can also be combined with sustainability from the ecoSuite specification, where the cognac-coloured leather of the seats with stone-grey piping and contrasting stitching is tanned through an eco-friendly process that uses olive leaf extracts but no chemicals.
The model-specific Design Selection for the ENYAQ Coupé iV 80 SportLine is all about black sports styling, for example on the roof lining and the Suedia-upholstered sports seats with integrated headrests. Grey decorative stitching adds contrast to the seats and can also be found on the three-spoke leather multifunction sports steering wheel. This is heated, offers paddles for selecting the various recuperation levels, and bears a SportLine badge. The leather-style dashboard and door trim sport model-specific carbon-fibre-effect decorative strips, while the pedal covers feature an aluminium design.
A model-specific Design Selection is exclusively reserved for the range-topping variant. The standard equipment includes carbon-fibre-effect decorative strips on the dashboard and door trim, pedal covers in aluminium design, and sports seats with integrated headrests adorned by a vRS emblem. In the Design Selection ‘vRS Suite’, the seat covers are made of black perforated leather with grey piping and contrasting stitching, which can also be found on the leather multifunction sports steering wheel. The dashboard features a leather look with contrasting stitching.
The range of standard equipment for the new ENYAQ Coupé iV includes two digital displays, dual-zone Climatronic and a two-spoke multifunction leather steering wheel featuring paddles to adjust the recuperation level, control buttons and knurled wheels. Extras can easily be added thanks to clearly structured option packs arranged by ten themes, such as assistance systems, driving dynamics, lighting and visibility, climate control, comfort, infotainment and family. Most of these packages are available as a Basic as well as a Plus bundle. The range of options for climate control includes heated front and rear seats as well as a heated windscreen and tri-zone Climatronic, which comes as standard for the vRS variant. A selection of individual options is available for all models, such as an electrically retractable tow bar and an anti-theft warning feature with interior surveillance.
With its long wheelbase, the ENYAQ Coupé iV offers generous amounts of space for five people. The flat floor means there is plenty of legroom and the thinner glass roof contributes to the headroom being on a par with the ŠKODA OCTAVIA estate. When equipped with an electric tailgate, the 570-litre boot can also be opened via the virtual pedal by waving a foot under the rear bumper. The low loading sill makes for effortless loading of the boot.

Featuring a second electric motor on the front axle, the range-topping ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS, transfers its power to the road via all-wheel drive. It is fitted with the 82-kWh battery. The system output of the two motors is 299 PS** for the ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS. As a result, ŠKODA’s first all-electric vRS model can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 6.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 111 mph. For the other coupé models, the top speed is 99 mph. The all-wheel-drive variant is permitted to tow a braked trailer weighing up to 1,400 kg on gradients of up to 8%, while the maximum towing capacity with rear-motor configuration is 1,200 kg.
Thanks to the latest ME3 software, all the ENYAQ Coupé iV is capable of a fast charging capacity of up to 135 kW. This means that the 82-kWh battery of the ENYAQ Coupé iV 80 can be charged from 10 to 80% in just 29 minutes (36 mins for vRS). ‘Refuelling’ at a public AC charging point with the same maximum power will take about as long. That’s why the ENYAQ Coupé iV comes with a Mode 3 charging cable as standard. It can also be charged with 2.3 kW using a conventional 230-volt household socket and an optional Mode 2 cable. Maximum flexibility is offered by the optional iV universal charger – a mobile solution with interchangeable connector plugs.
The ENYAQ Coupé iV’s aerodynamics – at a drag coefficient (cd) of 0.234 – are outstanding for an SUV coupé of this size. They contribute significantly to the car’s exceptional efficiency and long range. Its cd value is even better than that of the ENYAQ iV. Clever solutions, such as an active cooling roller blind in the lower air inlet of the front bumper and numerous aerodynamic measures that specifically guide the airstream around the body or under the vehicle (for example, an optimised front apron, a covered underbody, air curtains and a rear spoiler) made it possible to achieve this top value. An optional heat pump for heating and air conditioning the interior enables even greater efficiency and a longer range.
As the battery is incorporated into the underbody, the ŠKODA ENYAQ Coupé iV’s centre of gravity is especially low. This makes driving particularly safe and ensures excellent handling. Adaptive Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) as well as a sports chassis that features a firmer suspension and has been lowered by 15 mm at the front and 10 mm at the rear are both optional. The latter is a standard feature for the ENYAQ Coupé iV 80 SportLine and ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS, as is progressive steering. DCC continuously assesses the driving situation and adjusts damping and steering accordingly. The basic settings – Eco, Comfort, Normal and Sport – can be chosen in Driving Mode Select, while in the Individual mode, these can be fine-tuned using a slider. The all-wheel-drive ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS offers an additional, new option, the Traction mode, which is intended for driving on dirt tracks and gravel or slippery surfaces and provides constant all-wheel drive at speeds of up to 12 mph.

ŠKODA has focused on sustainable materials for the new ENYAQ Coupé iV, particularly recycled plastics, metals and glass to conserve natural resources. 13.1 kg of the plastics are recycled, as is 40% of the steel and 60% of the aluminium. In the Design Selection ‘Lodge’, the seat covers bear the Woolmark Company quality seal: they are made of 40% natural new wool and 60% recycled PET bottles. In the Design Selection ‘ecoSuite’, ŠKODA uses leather that is tanned in an eco-friendly process, using olive leaf extracts.
For ŠKODA, sustainability means not only switching to electric and zero-emission powertrains, but also selecting the materials for car production more consciously. The Czech carmaker has reduced the use of raw materials from non-renewable sources, lowering vehicle weight and energy consumption. ŠKODA uses 13.1 kg of recycled plastics in the ENYAQ Coupé iV, for the underbody covers for example. The material required for this is reclaimed from old battery housings and bumpers. The recycling rate of the metals used in the body is 40% for steel and as much as 60% for aluminium. The side windows of the ENYAQ Coupé iV are made of 20% recycled scrap glass.
In the development of sustainable elements, particular focus is being placed on the use of environmentally friendly, recycled materials with natural ingredients and a low carbon footprint. Such natural ingredients include sugar beet fibres, which are a waste product from a sugar refinery a few kilometres from ŠKODA’s headquarters in Mladá Boleslav. The ŠKODA engineers use them to develop fillers for plastic parts.
Seat covers made of new wool and PET bottles The ENYAQ Coupé iV’s floor and boot mats are made from sustainable materials, while recycled textiles are used for sound insulation. In the Design Selection ‘Lodge’, the seat covers are made of 40% natural new wool and bear the Woolmark Company’s Wool Blend Performance label, reserved for products containing between 30 and 49.9% new wool. Wool absorbs more moisture than any other fibre. It has a cooling effect, is breathable and also filters pollutants and odours from the surrounding air. The polyester for the upholstery fabrics comes from recycled PET bottles.
The seat covers and other parts of the interior are also particularly sustainable in the Design Selection ‘ecoSuite’. They are made of cognac-coloured leather with a smooth grained texture and are produced without the use of chromium sulfate-based chemicals. Olive leaf extracts preserve the environment during tanning.
The infotainment system in the new ENYAQ Coupé iV features a 5.3-inch Digital Cockpit, the largest central display in the current ŠKODA portfolio – measuring 13 inches – and the latest ME3 software version. The software ensures the infotainment screens and the optional head-up display are always up-to-date, while also providing optimised vehicle climate control and improved battery management. The ENYAQ Coupé iV has a permanent internet connection, so the ŠKODA Connect online services can be used at all times. Many of these services are designed for an electric vehicle, allowing battery charging or the interior’s air conditioning to be controlled remotely via the MyŠKODA app.
The ENYAQ Coupé iV features a free-standing central display as standard. With a 13-inch screen, it is the largest display in the Czech carmaker’s current model range. The layouts can be personalised and the screen can be operated using a touch slider, multi-touch gestures, gesture control or the Laura digital voice assistant which, backed by online data, understands 15 languages. The Digital Cockpit measures 5.3 inches. It clearly displays information regarding speed, driving data, navigation and assistance systems in four different layouts. These, as well as numerous vehicle functions and assistance systems, can be controlled via the multifunction steering wheel.
A head-up display is available as an option, projecting information in clear view for the driver. With the introduction of the latest ME3 software, the current battery charge level and the distance to the destination are also displayed. The central infotainment screen shows new, coloured icons for the web apps in the main menu, making them even easier to recognise. In the Media sub-menu, a separate icon has been added for playing music, and the dialogue box for entering addresses in the navigation has an all-black background for increased readability. In addition, the display of the rear view camera is now brighter and has a higher contrast. Besides enhanced user-friendliness, the latest ME3 software enables improved management and optimised temperature control of the battery. This increases its efficiency, reduces charging times and improves the range. An adapted and more energy-saving air conditioning system for the interior also contributes to this. Other innovations include a battery care mode that the driver can activate at the touch of a button located on the central display. This programme regulates that the battery is only charged to a maximum of 80% during the next charging cycle. It also reduces the charging speed when using direct current and the maximum charging output, thus reducing peak power.
Thanks to a built-in eSIM, the ENYAQ Coupé iV always has access to the internet, enabling the use of numerous online-backed functions. Traffic information is based on real-time data, as is the route planner of the optional navigation function. Likewise, available parking spaces nearby can be displayed. Furthermore, the internet connection provides an increased range of voice control functions. Some options in the comprehensive range of mobile online services available on ŠKODA Connect have been specifically designed for the operation of an electric vehicle. This means that the battery can be charged remotely via the MyŠKODA app or the air conditioning can be switched on ahead of a journey. It is also possible to set corresponding schedules. The navigation system can identify charging points nearby or on a planned route. A new feature in the MyŠKODA app is a reminder to turn on the vehicle’s heating or run a charging cycle if the outside temperature at the car’s location is too low for efficient battery use.
As standard, the infotainment system offers a DAB digital radio receiver as well as internet and hybrid radio. A smartphone can be integrated via Wireless SmartLink technology using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Optional extras include wireless smartphone charging (standard for the ENYAQ Coupé iV 80 SportLine and ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS) and a CANTON sound system with 12 speakers and a digital equaliser. The options can be expanded even after purchase, as the vehicle’s permanent internet connection enables not only navigation maps and system software to be updated remotely, but also the download of additional features. If desired, from the second half of 2022, the navigation function, additional colours for the ambient lighting, Adaptive Cruise Control or Light Assist, for example, can be activated via the infotainment system in the vehicle or the ŠKODA Connect web portal – these features may also be activated for a limited period of time only.
The ŠKODA ENYAQ Coupé iV offers an equally high level of active and passive safety as the ENYAQ iV. It has been awarded the highest-possible rating of five stars in the Euro NCAP crash safety reference tests and was named the safest vehicle in its category. Assistance systems have been further improved and, in their latest generation, use online-backed swarm data. The optional head-up display with augmented reality projects information onto the windscreen in clear view for the driver, while clever assistance systems warn of potential collisions or make parking more convenient, for example. If part of the specification, full-LED Matrix headlights provide even greater safety when visibility is poor.
The new ŠKODA ENYAQ Coupé iV offers a head-up display with augmented reality as an option. This projects information for the driver onto two different areas on the windscreen so they don't have to take their eyes off the road. The coupé’s speed, detected traffic signs, navigation instructions and information from the assistance systems are displayed just above the dashboard in clear view. Higher up on the windscreen, in the projection zone for augmented reality, larger symbols such as directional arrows from the navigation system are displayed and virtually projected onto the road ahead. New features include information regarding the distances for the next change in direction and navigation instructions for roundabouts, as well as the remaining distance to the destination and the battery charge level. Via the infotainment system menu, the driver can adjust the position of the display area on the windscreen, set the colour and brightness, and select what information is shown.
The ENYAQ Coupé iV offers the same safety features as the ENYAQ iV, which was awarded an excellent rating in the Euro NCAP tests, including a score of 94% of the maximum attainable points for adult passenger protection and 89% for children. In addition to the highest-possible rating of five stars, both the SUV and coupé were also named the safest vehicles in their categories in 2021. To date, they are the safest vehicles in their categories ever according to the European crash safety reference tests. Euro NCAP’s rules require all variants to be rated based on the same clearly defined criteria. As the designs of the SUV and coupé differ, the ENYAQ Coupé iV had to be subjected to special tests. The first safety-relevant area was the front bumper. The shape of this body part has an impact on the evaluation of a collision between a pedestrian and the vehicle. The second area was the rear of the vehicle, as the gently sloping roofline has implications for passenger safety. Therefore, with regard to adult protection, the functionality of the headrest was tested, and with regards to child protection, the placement and fastening of selected child seats on the rear seats. To achieve the required points, even the rescue cards had to be precisely adapted to the vehicle variant.
The coupé can be equipped with up to nine airbags. Driver and front passenger airbags are fitted as standard, as are front side airbags and two curtain airbags, which cover the side windows in the first and second rows of seats. A central airbag between the front seats reduces the impact between the driver and front passenger. Two side airbags for the outer rear seats are optional. In the event of an impending collision or a sudden braking manoeuvre, or if the car is in danger of skidding or tipping over, the proactive Crew Protect Assist feature (standard in the vRS) will tension the seat belts and close any open windows.
The ENYAQ Coupé iV can be equipped with any of the ŠKODA assistance systems available, some of which are new or enhanced. Travel Assist, which provides active support for longitudinal and lateral steering and comprises Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Adaptive Lane Assist including roadwork recognition, Traffic Jam Assist and Emergency Assist, now also uses current online-backed swarm data collected by suitably equipped Volkswagen Group vehicles. The data has been anonymised and made available to the system for evaluation and shared use. This enables the assistance systems to be more accurate. For example, adaptive Lane Assist is now able to take over lateral steering in narrow spaces in the city and can identify yellow lane markings in roadworks as well as barriers and vehicles parked at the side of the road. It can also assist when negotiating corners in the city, even in narrow streets and unmarked lanes. In the event of an impending collision with a pedestrian, cyclist or another vehicle, Collision Avoidance Assist supports the driver by actively increasing the steering moment to prevent the accident using a controlled evasive manoeuvre.
Travel Assist is activated by pressing a button on the multifunction steering wheel. It keeps the ENYAQ COUPÉ iV in its current lane and automatically monitors the distance to the vehicles ahead. The system can autonomously bring the car to a stop, make it pull away and follow other vehicles in congested traffic. It can automatically change lanes on motorways and multi-lane roads at speeds above 55 mph. Adaptive Cruise Control now also reacts to obstacles reported via online traffic data. The Travel Assist function requires the driver to keep their hands on the steering wheel. If the vehicle detects that the driver is no longer steering, braking or accelerating, Emergency Assist attempts to initially warn them visually, then acoustically and ultimately by jolting the brakes. If the driver fails to react, the hazard lights are activated, the vehicle is brought to a standstill in its current lane and eCall is triggered.
The standard feature Front Assist with Predictive Pedestrian and Cyclist Protection, as well as the optional Blind Spot Detect with Rear Traffic Alert warn of collisions with other vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians and static obstacles. When turning left at junctions, Turn Assist alerts the driver of oncoming traffic at an early stage, automatically bringing the car to a stop if necessary. When a door is opened, Exit Warning alerts the occupant if another vehicle or a cyclist is approaching from behind. It does this acoustically and visually via a light signal on the inside of the wing mirror housing.
The optional Park Assist feature automatically manoeuvres the vehicle into and out of parallel and bay parking spaces; it can brake and also detects pedestrians or objects. Using the Trained Parking feature, the system records the route into a frequently used parking space, for example in a narrow and angled driveway. The vehicle can then reproduce this route at any time if required. Will be available on UK models at a later date.
full-LED Matrix headlights (standard feature for the SportLine and ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS). Each Matrix high beam module contains 24 LEDs, which can be controlled individually and enable the driver to have the high beam on at all times without dazzling other road users. When the camera on the windscreen detects vehicles as well as people and objects reflecting the light, the intelligent lighting technology automatically turns off individual segments of the light beam.
Sporty coupé models have a long tradition at ŠKODA. The first representatives were the ŠKODA RAPID SIX and the ŠKODA POPULAR MONTE CARLO in the 1930s. A milestone in the history of the Czech car manufacturer was the ŠKODA 110 R from the 1970s. The rally car based on the 1970s model, the ŠKODA 130 RS, then became a motorsport legend as the ‘Porsche of the East’. The ŠKODA GARDE and ŠKODA RAPID followed between 1981 and 1990. Now the coupé tradition is being revived in Mladá Boleslav with the ŠKODA ENYAQ COUPÉ iV.
The history of the ŠKODA coupés began back in 1934 with a few ŠKODA RAPID SIX vehicles. The rear-wheel-drive rally car had a six-cylinder engine with an output of 37 kW (50 PS) and reached a top speed of 130 km/h. To mark the ŠKODA POPULAR’s second place in the category of cars with a capacity of up to 1,500 cc at the Monte Carlo Rally, ŠKODA launched the special-edition ŠKODA POPULAR MONTE CARLO producing 22 kW (30 PS) limited to 70 roadsters and coupés in 1936.
In the 1970s, ŠKODA produced an elegant two-door coupé – this was its first mass-production car. Demand for the ŠKODA 110 R, introduced in 1970, was so great that the majority of vehicles produced at the Kvasiny plant were exported to western markets. The model set itself apart from the ŠKODA 100/110 notchback saloon due to its laid-back windscreen, wide doors with frameless windows and sloping rear. This model featured a unibody design, a rear-mounted 1.1-litre engine with twin carburettors and separate oil cooler, and produced 38 kW (52 PS); its top speed was 145 km/h. The engine block and crankcase were manufactured according to a Czech patent using the aluminium die-casting process. By 1980, more than 57,000 units of the ŠKODA 110 R had been built, providing a perfect basis for the brand’s motorsport activities. Following the ŠKODA 180 RS and 200 RS rally prototypes, the ŠKODA 130 RS became a legend. In 1977, the ‘Porsche of the East’ finished first and second in its category at the famous Monte Carlo Rally and also won the Acropolis Rally. The circuit-racing variant had an output of 105 kW (142 PS) and took the overall win in the 1981 European Touring Car Championship.
The 110 R was succeeded by the ŠKODA GARDE in 1981. It was based on the 105/120 notchback series and featured a rear axle with semi-trailing arms, precise rack-and-pinion steering and front seats with integrated headrests. Producing 40.5 kW (55 PS), it reached a top speed of 150 km/h. Over a period of three years, more than 11,000 were built in Kvasiny and Bratislava. This model was followed by the ŠKODA RAPID in 1984, sporting a body designed by the renowned Italian Giorgio Giugiaro. The RAPID 130, 135 and 136 had an output of between 40.5 kW (55 PS) and 46 kW (63 PS), while the 135 and 136 variants were produced mainly for export. By 1990, more than 33,000 RAPIDs had been produced.
