The Škoda Octavia is celebrating 30 years since the start of its modern-generation production. Since its introduction in 1996, the model has served as a core vehicle for the brand, combining practical design with Volkswagen Group technology.

Development of the modern Octavia began in 1992, one year after Škoda Auto joined the Volkswagen Group. Dirk van Braeckel, then Head of Design, styled the vehicle. To support production, a new facility in Mladá Boleslav increased annual manufacturing capacity from 90,000 to 350,000 vehicles.

The first-generation liftback was unveiled on 4 April 1996, featuring a 528-litre boot. Series production commenced on 3 September 1996. The Octavia Combi launched in March 1998, followed by an all-wheel-drive variant in 1999. The high-performance Octavia RS debuted in 2000. Total first-generation production reached 1.44 million units, with selected variants remaining in production until 2010.

Unveiled in 2004, the second-generation Octavia increased boot capacity by 32 litres and introduced DSG dual-clutch transmissions. Production concluded in 2013 with 2.6 million units built.

The third-generation model introduced a lighter body alongside optimised TSI and TDI engines. It featured a GreenLine version that utilised special underbody panelling, brake energy recuperation and low-rolling-resistance tyres to lower fuel consumption. A major facelift in 2017 introduced split headlights, glass-design infotainment screens and upgraded driver assistance systems.

The fourth-generation Octavia debuted in November 2019 in liftback and Combi body styles. An update in early 2024 added improved connectivity, up to ten airbags and an updated Attention and Drowsiness Assist system utilising a new fatigue assessment algorithm.

The Octavia nameplate was originally used by Škoda for a model produced between 1959 and 1971. Škoda Auto, based in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic, integrated into the Volkswagen Group in 1991.
