On Friday 19 August at 07:45am, a ŠKODA Octavia vRS officially became the world's fastest 2.0-litre supercharged production car in the world when the 600 bhp ‘salt spec’ racer – built to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the iconic vRS performance flagship badge – registered a Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) sanctioned speed of 227.070 mph on Utah’s legendary Bonneville Salt Flat.
The modified production Octavia vRS hatch, prepared by ŠKODA UK, smashed the previous record for a 2.0-litre forced induction production car at this year's Bonneville Speed Week (13-19 August), registering an impressive official record speed of 227.080 mph.
The previous record for what is known as the G/PS category was 216 mph, set in August 1998.
Driven by journalist Richard Meaden, the Octavia had set impressive speeds throughout the week breaking the 200 mph barrier on six previous runs.
The Octavia’s record breaking runs consisted of two official runs of Bonneville's famous five-mile course at 225.513 mph on Thursday 18 August, and a return run at 228.647 mph on Friday 19 August.
Robert Hazelwood, Director for ŠKODA UK, said: “This is a truly stunning achievement. Our goal was to break 200 mph as a celebration of 10 years of vRS, and we have achieved that, and significantly more. The success is a tribute to everyone who has worked so tirelessly and with such passion to make ŠKODA a world beater.”
The Milton Keynes based ŠKODA UK team behind the racer had spent the week leading up to Speed Week putting the car through a rigorous dyno programme with the assistance of performance software and tuning outfit specialist REVO Technik.
Daytime temperatures on the Bonneville Salt Flats typically exceed 40C (104F).

Even before its market launch, the Czech car manufacturer’s first high performance SUV, the ŠKODA KODIAQ vRS, proves that it can hold its own on the most challenging race track in the world. Racing driver Sabine Schmitz set the lap record for a seven-seater SUV at the Nürburgring’s legendary Nordschleife in the ŠKODA KODIAQ vRS, highlighting the car’s performance qualities. The KODIAQ vRS extends the range of vRS models in the ŠKODA line up.
A detailed report from the record breaking-lap with the video and photo-gallery, as well as the article with interviews with Sabine Schmitz and František Drábek, can be found on ŠKODA Storyboard. The material is freely downloadable and useable in media.

ŠKODA’s new compact SUV is called the KAROQ. The name and its spelling originate from the language of the Alutiiq, an indigenous tribe who live on an island off the southern coast of Alaska. For the name of the new compact SUV, ŠKODA has drawn on the spelling of the ŠKODA KODIAQ and in doing so, has created a consistent nomenclature for the brand’s current and future SUV models. The ŠKODA KAROQ will be introduced to the public for the first time in Stockholm on 18 May and represents a further milestone in ŠKODA’s SUV campaign.

ŠKODA has announced that ordering for the new
Octavia vRS and Scout ranges will open on 1 March, with prices starting from £25,130
cylinder capacity, more power. In the ŠKODA FABIA and ŠKODA FABIA ESTATE, a 1.0
TSI engine with three cylinders and four valves is replacing the 1.2-litre
engine with four cylinders that has been used to date. The new engine offers more
power. The power output of the ŠKODA FABIA 1.0 TSI is 95 PS, while the output
of the more powerful version is at 110 PS but offers an improved torque figure of
200 Nm (previously 175 Nm). Downsizing offers another advantage: the engine’s
fuel consumption has been reduced by up to six per cent. One reason for this is
the three-cylinder engine concept with a reduced weight of the free inertial
forces and a more efficient oil pump. The revised ŠKODA FABIA and ŠKODA FABIA
ESTATE will be introduced to the public for the first time at the Geneva
International Motor Show (7-19 March 2017).
ŠKODA has delivered its two-millionth vehicle in China. The milestone vehicle is a ŠKODA SUPERB with a 1.4 TSI engine in Polar White. China is the largest single market for the long-established Czech brand. In 2017, ŠKODA is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its entry into the Chinese market.
ŠKODA is enhancing the elegant and affordable family favourites ŠKODA RAPID and ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK with numerous innovations. New lighting systems ensure even greater safety. Passengers are 'always online' thanks to an available WLAN hotspot. The new programme includes two efficient 1.0-TSI engines with three cylinders. The upgraded models will be presented to the public for the first time at the Geneva International Motor Show (7 – 19 March, 2017).
ŠKODA is celebrating yet more awards success with two victories at the 2017 Honest John Awards. In what is rapidly becoming another 'silverware spring' for the brand, the Superb and Octavia Estate both drove off with category wins.
