Škoda and Cycling

Our heritage with bicycles dates back to the start of the company in 1895 when the founders Vaclav Laurin and Vaclav Klement joined forces and began manufacturing bicycles in their home town of Mlada Boleslav in Czech Republic. Cycling has remained an important area for us to support over the years – worldwide we are partner of the famous Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, Tour de Suisse, Tour de Reomandie and the Road World Championship organised by the International cycling Federation (UCI).

Here in the UK, we are very excited about our association with two UK teams this year – Rapha Condor Sharp and Team Raleigh.

Rapha Condor Sharp

Rapha Condor Sharp is set to storm the continental calendar in 2010, which will start with the Tour de Vaucluse in France followed by the Tour of Taiwan, Tour of Normandie, and the Tour of Bretagne amongst others. The first British Premier Calendar races will be the Tour of the Reservoir, Tour of Doonhame (formerly the Girvan) and the UCI 1.2 East Midlands Classic.

As Britain’s number one race team, Rapha Condor Sharp has this year retained its top cyclists, including National Road Race Champion Kristian House, Elite Circuit Race Series winner Dean Downing, Olympic bronze medalist Chris Newton, Darren Lapthorne, Tom Southam, African Champion Dan Craven, Ben Greenwood and Matt Cronshaw.

New arrivals for 2010 are Britain’s Graham Briggs (who rode for the team in 2008) and recently turned pro Jonathan Tiernan Locke, who will look to flourish in a very strong team. Also joining the squad are two Australians, Zak Dempster and Dean Windsor.

We are the official supplier of vehicles for the cycling team in the form of two award-winning Superb Estates – the eagerly awaited estate version of the company’s luxury Superb model which went on sale in the UK at the end of February. In addition, the team’s cycling kit will now feature the Škoda logo.

Robert Hazelwood, Škoda’s Brand Director, "We recognise the importance of supporting like-minded brands which share the same level of energy, enthusiasm and innovation as Škoda. We also felt that sponsoring a cycling team was an excellent fit for a manufacturer which originally started life building bicycles.

"Rapha Condor Sharp has an excellent reputation in the cycling arena and we look forward to supporting the team this year."

About Team Raleigh

The squad is aiming to compete in predominantly British races during 2010, but has ambitious plans to propel the team into Europe within the next five years. This year, Team Raleigh will compete in the Premier Calendar series, Tour Series and Elite circuit races.

Mark Gouldthorp MD Raleigh UK Ltd, comments: "2010 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Team Raleigh and we have high hopes! It’s great to be affiliated with a brand such as Škoda that share our passion for cycling and we’d like to take this opportunity to welcome the company to Raleigh and give our thanks for their much-appreciated support."

Skoda Sponsorship

Škoda's Sponsorship

With a history steeped in cycling heritage and a ‘happy’ brand synonymous with energy and adventure, sponsoring a cycling team like Team Raleigh is an excellent brand fit.

In addition to having the Škoda logo on the team’s jerseys and shorts Škoda will also be providing vehicle support for the riders. The award-winning Superb Estate and an Octavia model, will be liveried with the Team Raleigh branding. Both the vehicles will be used to carry essential team equipment and will follow the riders on their cycling tours throughout the UK.

Robert Hazelwood, Škoda’s Brand Director, "Like Škoda, Raleigh has always been a brand that encourages people to get outside and have fun. Its bikes have become well-established as the household name in British cycling and we are excited to support the team in what has been called their comeback year."
